Elmer Gibbs served with the 27th Coast Artillery (formerly B Battery 3rd Artillery. He volunteered along with four of his brothers for the Spanish American War. He enlisted 9 July 1898 and was discharged 3 March 1899. His record says he was 23 1/2 years of age, 5' 9 1/2" tall, dark complexion, blue No. 11 eyes, light brown hair. Occupation-Butcher. He was single, in good physical condition. His service was "honest and faithful. Served during war with Spain from July 9, 1898". He was paid $48.00.

He reenlisted 4 March 1899 and was finally discharged at Fort Santiago, Manila, the Philippines 3 march 1892. His military record says «i»"Continuous service at rate of«/i» «i»discharge 3 yrs. 7 mos. and 22 days."«/i» «i»Non-commisioned officer Corporal from May 26/01 to Dec 1st 1901 reduced at his own request". Physical condition at discharge good. Service honest and faithful.«/i» He was paid in full on Mar 5, 1902 $122.25.

  Engagement at San Pedro Tunasun, Laguna Province Jan. 5, 1901.
  Night attack at Cabuyao Laguna Province Jan. 23, 1901.
  Ten days scouting-Province of Cavite Feb. 23 to March 5, 1901.
  Two days skirmish in Cavite Province April 25 & 26 1901.
  Scout in Batangas Province from May 22 to July 2, 1901 including three days
  engagement at Talumpoc Mountain June 18, 19 & 20 1901.

China Service:

  In China from 8-20 to 11-7, 1900 were stationed at Tongku and Tietsin

He played semi- pro baseball with the San Diego Mercantiles and the San Diego Zephers. In 1920, he moved to Fresno, Ca. where he owned a butcher shop.

He was disabled with arthritis of the hip and spent the last years of his life on crutches. He was killed in an auto accident on Route 66 Kingman, AZ. His best friend Bill Kohler was driving.
