Ellen Marks was born around 1827. She was from the Magherafelt area of Northern Ireland. She married William Vincent (Vinson) an emigrant from England. By 1855 they were living in Hasting, Minnesota where their daughter Sarah was born. In the early 1860's the family moved to Illinois living perhaps around Macoupin County or Springfield. Ellen's husband William left the family presumably after the move to Illinois. Ellen died in Illinois leaving Satrah an orphan. According to her granddaughter Etta Conklin, Ellen and two children (William and Emma) are buried in “the bottoms” near East St. Louis, Illinois.

In the 1950’s her great granddaughter Etta Conklin and Leslie Daley, a descendant of Ellen’s sister Mary corresponded. Leslie compiled Marks family information based on family information from his aunt and from a distant cousin, Robert Marks of Belfast, Ireland. Robert’s father was William Marks who had been born in 1832. Much of the information below is a result of this information. Information on the generations of James and William Marks agrees with information that other Marks family members have. A descendant of Ellen’s sister did some research on the family. It has not been verified but some of the information matches what other Marks family members have said.

Magherafelt is a market town and is situated halfway between Belfast and the City of Londonderry. It is close to Lough Neagh (the largest inland lake in the British Isles) and the Sperrin Mountains. Magherafelt is in Barony of Loughinsholin and parish of Magherafelt. Some of the family also lived in the town of Ballyronan and Ballinderry.

Family oral tradition says that Ellen sailed to Philadelphia and that it was in Philadelphia that she met her husband William Vincent (Vinson) and married him. Records to support this have not been found. She could be Ellen Marks who arrived on Dec 13, 1850 at age:24 Port of Arrival:Philadelphia Port of Departure:Liverpool Place of Origin:Ireland Ship Name:Ship Nicholas Biddle

The 1857 Minnesota census gives her age as 30.
