Ellen Coghlan was born in Ireland, the daughter of a silk merchant and steward named John Coghlan and his wife Ellen. No evidence has yet been found for where exactly in Ireland the family lived. Some time prior to 1845, she moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, where she married a Scottish stone mason named William Ralston on 25th November 1845 at St Werburgh's Catholic Church.

At the time of her marriage, Ellen was living at Market Street, Birkenhead. The year after their marriage, William and Ellen's daughter Catherine was born at Miller Court, Albion Street. By the 1851 census the family was living at 3 St Anne Street (which was a continuation of Market Street). Ellen, her husband William and their children were living with Ellen's widowed mother, Ellen Coghlan senior, who was a nurse and midwife. There was also a Bartholomew Coghlan living with the family, described as a grandson of Ellen Coghlan senior, implying that he was Ellen junior's nephew. This indicates that Ellen must have had at least one sibling who survived to adulthood, but whose identity has yet to be established.

In 1854, William Ralston died aged 29 whilst working in New York. Ellen was pregnant at the time and gave birth a month later to their sixth child. Ellen outlived her husband by less than four years, dying of typhus aged 32 on 19th July 1858 at home at 5 St Anne Street[4].

Following Ellen's death, her mother was responsible for the six Ralston children, and placed some of them in the Liverpool Orhanage (Liverpool Orphan Asylum, Myrtle Street, Liverpool).

  4. The street appears to have been renumbered between 1851 and 1861 such that this is almost certainly the same house the family were living in at the time of the 1851 census. It was next door but one to the Duke of Connaught PH. The whole block was demolished to make way for the flats known as Oak and Eldon Gardens, built in 1958.
