William Ralston was born in 1848 at Birkenhead in Cheshire. He was the second of six children of a stone mason called William Ralston and his wife Ellen Coghlan. When William was about six years old his father William died in New York. Just under four years later his mother Ellen died at home in Birkenhead of typhus, leaving William and his five siblings orphaned. Their grandmother (also called Ellen Coghlan) was still alive and looked after the six children, although had to resort to placing some of them in the care of the Liverpool Orphan Asylum. It is not known whether William spent any time in the orphanage as the boys' register is lost, but two of his three sisters spent time there.

In the 1861 census all six children were at home with their grandmother at 5 St Anne Street. William has not been traced after 1861.
