Facts and Events
Ellen was born in Ireland, but the earliest traced appearance for her is in 1851 in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England. By this time she was already a widow, and had her daughter Ellen's family living with her, along with a grandson named Bartholomew Coghlan and some lodgers.
Following her son-in-law William Ralston's death in 1854 and her daughter Ellen's death in 1858, Ellen found herself responsible for her six Ralston grandchildren. At least some of the children were placed in the Liverpool Orphanage, although they did also spend periods at home with their grandmother, including at the time of the 1861 census.
Ellen was admitted to the Birkenhead Union Workhouse, Church Road, Tranmere, on 1 March 1869, where she died eleven days later.
