John Coghlan was a silk merchant (according to his widow's death certficate) and steward (according to his daughter Ellen's marriage certificate). He was almost certainly from Ireland, with Coghlan being an Irish name and his wife and daughter both giving their birthplaces as Ireland in the English censuses is which they appear. John appears to have died prior to 30th March 1851, as his wife Ellen described herself as a widow in the English census of that date.
