Poem written by Ella Nora Trainer when she was 24 years old (about 1898).

     AN OCTOBER OUTING

Up on the Switch Back, ever so high, Martha and Nellie, Charlie and I; The air was so cold, our faces were blue, But viewing the scenery, enchanted we grew.

Then to the Glen we wended our way, Feeling so hungry we dared not delay. Four weary pilgrims roamed o'er the Glen Then homeward to Greater Lehighton again.

    • See poem also written by Charles M. Krater, dated October 12, 1898. Probably written about the same outing.

This was written by Marian Krater Klingbeil, Ella Nora's daughter:

Ella Trainer so they say First came to see the light of day on April 5 of ' 74 and now has reached a good 5 score Lehighton, PA was her birthplace Where mother Susan first saw her face Then daddy John took his turn For his new daughter he wanted to learn. A 2-yr stay in Parkerton Then back again to Lehighton Where years rolled on as years will do Bringing more life daily into view. But sad to say when brother John Made his appearance in that town That mother Susan nine days could live Then due to infection her life did give.

Housekeepers tried to replace dear mother But surely there could be no other Till Liza came & worked a year And proved with doubt they need not fear She proved to be a right good mother And so the family sought none other To help them with each daily chore As many good traits she helped them store. Whether cleaning, sewing or just plain being She taught them all the joy of living And being a blessing on to another What more need one ask of a right good mother?

Step brothers and sisters came along then - Ed, Arthur, Beulah, and then Allen Her own full kin number three more - Lillie, Carrie, and John. Ella she made 4.

      • This is a handwritten history, and it's not clear which children belong to which mother.**

Then years went by as years will do And so the family became a few. Dear Ella left to live with Kate and spent 7 years helping to date.

Those 3-story houses could tell many takes Of duties, of sickness, of courting, oh well-- Of course the love bug entered and Charlie, dear man, Took Ella to wife and their home did plan.

Then off to Philly with Lilly she worked For a Quaker maiden & never she shirked In duties many and heavy for her. Who then was very slight but of strong caliber.

When weeks passed into months and a year passed by Charlie pressed the point for a knot to tie. Elder Fitzgerald had his part in it too. For he saw a bright future this couple to view.

Tent meetings in Philly intrigued our dear Lilly But Ella a Methodist meant ever to say However the meetings became so that Ella and Charlie soon joined.

As an Adventist Charlie no longer could be A Postman for Pilly so what future to see? But Elder Hurlinger used him in the mission to work And that until Fitzgerald urged him to be a nurse.

So on to B.C. (Battle Creek, Michigan) in the year 1901 Where nursing classes kept Charles on the run and Ella dear soul in the serving room did work As hard as ever and no duties did she shirk In 1907 a great movement began So Charles and Ella bid farewell to the sun and traveled back East for a farming They went. For 7 whole years and their energies spent. Here Marian was born and gave Mother a rest From the daily farmchores whch put her to a test.

Seven years passed by and in 1914 they went Back to Battle Creek where remaining service was spent In '42 (1942) they trekked to the west Settling in Loma Linda til Dad went to rest.

Then on to Buelah's mother Krater did go. and enjoyed life in Allentown for 5 years or so.

When Paul finished school and found a nice home Mother Krater soon joined us no longer to roam. Except for one year with Buelah and John Spent up in Washington state -- no charge for the rent.

Her life has been full with God's blessings poured out

A blessing to many she has been without doubt When asked how she did it she, not hesitant to say, "That was easy, with God's help I did it day by day."

Actual eulogy/obituary written when Ella Nora died.

Ella Nora Traner was born April 4, 1874 in Lehighton, Pennsylvania of English and Irish parentage.

In Philadelphia Nora and her friend, Charles Krater, both Methodists, attended religious meetings conducted by Elder W. J. Fitzgerald. Upon learning the Sabbath truth Charlie asked Nora, "What are you planning to do about all this?" Nora replied, "I'm going to be baptized, but it would never do for me to keep the Sabbath and you not, so then we could not marry." This was an impossible thought to Charlie who immediately took his stand and the two were baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This act of faith cost them their jobs, Charlie having been recently promoted to the Philadelphia Post office. Therefore their pastor suggested they go to the Battle Creek Sanitarium to train as nurses. This they did but Nora was disqualified because of her small size and light weight.

For about thirty years they lived and worked in Battle Creek, Michigan, sacrificing to give denominational education to their three children, even through depression years. Mother Krater in her quiet and selfless ways instilled in them qualities of industry and high moral standards, keeping them close to God and the church. The children are Gladys Ferciot of Georgia, Marian Klingbeil of Paradise, Ca, and Paul Krater of Loma Linda. Other survivors include 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

To be near daughter Marian, Mr. and Mrs. Krater, oin 1942, moved to Loma Linda where Charles died in 1945. For the past 26 years she made her home with son, Paul and family.

During her 32 years of widowhood God blessed the mind and pen of Grandma Krater as she kept continuous inspirational correspondence with relatives and friends. She completed her final letter early in her last week of life when extreme weakness made it difficult for her to move about.

After less than two days in Linda Valley Convalescent Home she quietly went to her rest Sabbath, March 12, 24 days short of her 103rd birthday.

Newspaper article regarding her 95th birthday was scanned into the program, but it did not come through clearly. Here is the text from the original article.

The Bulletin (Loma Linda, CA) 9 April 1969

'Grandma' Krater observes 95th birthday with friends

Wee friends of 'Grandma' Krater as well as their parents, former neighbors, friends, and relatives joined in extending birthday greetings to her Sunday afternoon, her 95th birthday.

Ella Nara Trainer was born in Lehighton, PA in 1874. She married Chas M. Krater in 1901 in Phila. Pa., and to this marriage was born Mrs. Gladys Ferciot of Burshib Springs, Tenn., Mrs. Marian Klingbeil of Glendale, and Paul M. Krater of Loma Linda.

Upon retirement the Kraters left the East and cam to Loma Linda in 1942 and built a home on San Marcos St.

Following the death of her husband in 1945 Mrs. Krater returned to Pennsylvania.

The last twenty years she has spent in the home of her son in Lancaster and lately in Loma Linda.

She still enjoys writing letters, sewing, and helping prepare meals for her busy daught-in-law in her home at 25596 Gould Street, north Loma Linda. She is a "home" member of the Campus Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church in Loma Linda.

She has eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. *************************************************************************************************** Article from the Loma Linda Bulletin, 18 April 1974.

ELLA KRATER IS . . . AVERAGE CENTINARIAN

At first glance, there is nothing extraordinary to be seen in Mrs. Ella Nora Trainer Krater. She has the medium build of any person who is five feet tall. She has blue eyes that twinkle, and her short gray hair is arranged in loose curls.

Friday, April 5, was a special day in the life of Mrs. Krater. She celebrated her 100th birthday. She was born in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, 1874, the third child in a family of eight.

In 1901 Ella Trainer and Charles Krater were baptized in the Seventh-day Adventist Church and a short while later, were married. Acting upon the suggestion of their pastor, they moved to Michigan. Ella worked in the sewing room as a seamstress, and her husband enrolled in the nursing school at the Battle Creek Sanitarium.

Father Krater completed 27 years of nursing at the Battle Creek San., and in 1942 retired in Loma Linda. They joined the Campus Hill SDA church where mother Krater has held continuous membership since 1942. Mr. and Mrs. Krater designed their home which is located at 24598 San Marcos Street. In 1945 the family was saddened by the death of Dad Krater. Mom Krater went east for a few years to live with a sister. Later she returned to the west to live with her son Paul and his family.

Ella Krater's family includes two daughters, Mrs. W.H. Ferciot (Gladys), Mrs. L. J. Klingbeil (Marian) and her son paul with whom she makes her home at 25696 (incorrect address printed -- should be 25596) Gould Street, Loma Linda. There are eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Today, Grandma Krater occupies her time writing her many friends, and helping around the home as she feels equal to the task at hand. Though somewhat slow, she walks with dignity and without assistance.

Notes scribbled from conversation between Marian Krater Klingbeil and Janice Krater Roberts, approx 1998.

Lillian and Ella Nora Trainer Krater (sisters) inherited money from a rich uncle they didn't know they had. (Toughey) it was contested. This was in Battle Creek, MI, when Marian was in the 8th grade - approx 1922-23. The inheritance did not concern Beulah -- she was a half sister.

When she got the money, Ella Nora Krater took her children Marian and Paul to Phildelphia for a month for the sesqui-centennial. Per internet search, the Philadelphi Sesqui-Centennial took place from June 1 through December 1, 1926. Marian would have been 19 years old at the time, and Paul would have been 11 years old.

1930 Census: 9 Wilkes, Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan. Charles M., age 54, Ella, age 56, Marian, age 21, Lillian Trainer, age 60.
