Then alightng at Mauch Chunk, There our vision had its fill; It required a lot of spunk To climb up that great big hill. Great Mount Pisgah loomed just forward; Oh! the Switchback, reached at last. Then the car, it started upward, Said Miss Martha, "hold on fast!" Oh, the beauty of Dame Nature, Of the wonderland around; It enchanted; we fair creatures, Found new joys at every bound. Oh, yes on, we flew together, Nellie, Martha, Nora, I; Passing now the crimson heather, While the sun shone in the sky. On the homestretch ere we knew, Floating down from cold zero, Saw where the spreading chestnut grew, Caught a glimpse of the world below. To the lovely Glen Onoko, Was our dearest wish to stray; With that gnawing in our stomachs, They invited me to pray. There we ate until replenished, With the food to suit a king. There we had our "phiz's" taken: Looked like angels without wings. Through the glen, with leaves of Autumn, We our weary feet did bring; With our dainty hands we sought 'em, Songs of joy we all did sing. Homeward bound, we, weary wanderers, Longed for Dreamlands sweet repose. But that fond remembrance lingers, Longer than dew-drops on the rose. Who were the people mentioned in the poem? Author:Charles Milton Krater Nora:Ella Nora Trainer (later Charles' wife) Nellie:Probably Charles M. Krater's sister Nellie, born 8 Dec 1880 Martha:Probably Charles M. Krater's sister Martha, born 13 Dec 1878 Letter written by Dr. M.A. Mortensen to Mr. Charles S. Jones, General Agent 705-709 Security National Bank Building Battle Creek, Michigan 18 August 1941 Dear Sir: At your request, I examined Mr. Charles M. Krater, of 9 Wilkes Street, Battle Creek, Michigan, the other day when he presented himself. My conclusion is to the effect that he is a little better than he was six months ago, but the fundamental trouble, namely, his cardio-vascular condition is still in evidence and because of this his capacity for physical activity is decidedly limited. On examination we find his blood pressure between 160-70/90. Apex is noted in the 6th interspace outside the mid-clavicular line. Cardiac dulness extends from the right border of the sternum to this area. There is a prolonged, rough systolic mumur at the apex and a very definite systolic murmer heard over the aortic area, rough in character and transmitted upward. No irregularities were noted during the examination. There is some congestion at the base of the lungs in the nature of crackles, that practically disappears after a few deep inspirations. My conclusion is to the effect that he has an aortic stenosis in addition to a mitral regurgitation, and with it hypertensive heart disease, which means a rather discouraging combination. While he is more comfortable at this time of the year than in the winter, I feel that it would be impossible for him to carry on and maintain a position in the field of endeavor that he has followed for many years; namely, nursing and physiotherapy. I feel certain that he would falter within a couple of weeks in attempting to do anything of this sort and, as far as I know, he is not fitted for any other type of work. Yours sincerely, (Signed) M. A. Mortensen, M.D.
