At age four she could pick out harmonies from Sunday School hymns and play them on a pump organ. Played the organ for the Fifth Street Methodist Church in Pottstown when she was a teenager. Spent summers on Block Island (off Rhode Island) as a clerk, hostess, entertainer, and golfer. She was a school teacher by profession before her marriage to Wallace Dill. Became ill with tuberculosis around 1911. She was still teaching school and conducting the Presbyterian choir at that time. Wallace took her and the children to New Mexico with the idea that a dry climate could help.
