Facts and Events
Bess Wallace was the daughter of the owner of a successful milling company. She married local haberdasher (and future president) Harry S. Truman in 1919 after he returned from World War I. She worked in his haberdashery and stayed home with their daughter in Independence until they moved to Washington in 1934 when he was elected to the Senate.
As First Lady, she took a much more low-key role than her predecessor Eleanor Roosevelt, and was not thrilled with his decision to run for Vice-President (which lead to him succeeding to the presidency three months later). She supported traditional causes, and spent a great deal of time at home in Independence.
She lived almost 30 years after they left the White House, living in Independence and rarely appearing at public events.
