Elizabeth McGuffin(Bearden) is Don Jaynes' great, great grandmother on his father's side. She lived to be 103. She was born in Pickens District (now Anderson County, South Carolina,)and she was called "Betsey." She married William Abels near Decatur, GA at 18 in 1826. Wm. Abels died leaving her widdowed with 4 children, and she married William Bearden the local blacksmith and had 9 more children. Their sons were: Joseph--born in 1834, Thompson, 1842, Andrew 1844, James 1848, Sam 1856 and Wesley (John). Four of their sons grew up to be prosperous farmers in Oakway, one moved to Rayston, GA and became a miller. Elizabeth made their clothes w/spinning wheel and loom. During Civil War, she helped her husband bore out rifles and 5 of her sons served for the south--Wesley died at Petersburg, VA (See newspaper account.) She was a devout Baptist; her favorite hyms were Amazing Grace and Nearer My God to Thee -- but, as a young girl whe went to Decatur and "danced till midnight--went home--ate breakfast and finished with the Georgia Breakdown." When she was 100, her decendants gave a great reunion. She had 400 decendants living in Georgia, South Carolina and Texas, incl. Mrs. J.L. Allgood, Mrs. Pylana, Mrs Fannie Grant & Mrs. L.F. Jaynes -- grandaughters; grandsons, Wm. Brown b. 1846, still living in 1911. She never called a doctor until her last illness.
