Joseph Bearden, Amanda Bearden Jaynes' father, was born on 01 Dec 1838 in Pendleton, Anderson, South Carolina. He was living in Pickens, South Carolina, working at the barrel maker's trade and helping in his father's gunworks, when he met and married Ellen Land in about 1860. He served in the Confederate military in 1863 in Macon, Bibb, Georgia, USA (Confederate Regiment 23 GA Infantry (Pendergrass Co. Local Defense, Private. Fought in Battle of Chickamauga near Lookout Mtn. in TN & was shot in knee. Transferred to Macon GA, he was eventually released to walk back home to South Carolina.) After the war, gunsmithing wasn't very profitable, so he and Ellen farmed and continued to live in Center, Oconee, South Carolina, and go to the Baptist church until she died in 1910. Then in 1911, his mother died at 103, and he served as one of her pallbearers. He died on 13 May 1914 in Oconee County, South Carolina.
