She came to Newbridge to teach school. The story is told that when she arrived at Fergus, she had missed the stagecoach. As a result a group of the travellers decided to walk. When they got to Elora the others went their way and grandma walked on alone through the bush. She stayed overnight at a farmhouse near Parkin (near Drayton). There is also a story that when she arrived in the community, William Spence was seriously interested in another lady in the area, however Elizabeth was determined that she would be his wife.
