Facts and Events
John joined the cavalry in the Union Army under a "bounty" arrangement. Apparently wealthy Americans recruited Canadians to serve in the miliary instead of their sons who had been conscripted for the war. He may have served using the name of the person he replaced. After the war he stayed in the Army until the end of his contract. He spent most of this time guarding wagon trains going West. When discharged, he ran a store in Spencetown and later in Fordwich. He went to Michigan (near SSM) where he died and was buried. |
