A widow Mrs Foster lived near the Spence's. She wanted to remarry but the man did not want the 2 children. A home was found for Johnny's younger sister but none was found for Johnny. He came to Grandma asking that they look after him. Although Grandma did not want another child, Grandpa agreed to take Johnny. On the day Mrs Foster left, she stopped the buggy at the end of the lane and Johnny walked up the lane dragging his suitcase. He was only 6 years old. He lived with Grandma and Grandpa until he grew up.
