[Note: according to editor comments following, this article refutes the idea that William Knight m. an otherwise non-existent widow of Thomas Stoughton, largely based on finding this marriage record. Thus the known fact that Israel Stoughton is called son-in-law of William Knight can be based on the marriage and does not necessarily imply that William Knight's wife Elizabeth was the widow of Rev. Thomas Stoughton. The article itself concluded the identification of Israel Stoughton's wife as daughter of William Knight was "possible though not fully proved", largely because William did not name his daughter Elizabeth explicitly in his will, requiring an assumption that she received her portion at time of marriage.]
