It appears that the enumerator was not taking a large amount of care in accuracy. Very clearly the mother and both daughters cannot have all their parents born in exactly the same state. If the daughters were born in Alabama then their Father was born in ???, and Mother was born in Ala per the first entry. I think it is true that William W. Gassaway was born in North Carolina. I am not sure about Cosby Curtis. Elizabeth was born in South Carolina, but lived for some time in Alabama. I know nothing about the two daughters, but they could have been born in the time after I lost track of Elizabeth and Thomas.

This is particularly interesting. Is it possible that this is Elizabeth, a widow after the Civil war with two teen age daughters. This part of Alabama had a large group of cotton growers who moved from South Carolina prior to the War. I suppose that the owner could have been a family accquantance in South Carolina and gave Elizabeth a place to make her living. But the life of a share cropper after the war would have been tough at best.

I just looked up the information that I have on my grgrgrand Aunt Cosby Curtis. I thought that I had more, however I only found the little that I am sending you here. Cosby Curtis born abt 1812 in Pendleton Dist S.C. married William W. Gassaway, born abt 1812 also in Pendleton Dist. SC. I have them with three children:

   1. Elizabeth Gassaway born 1834 in S.C.I have her Married to Thomas

Alexander Nix-born abt 1831

           John T. Nix born 1856
           James F Nix born 1858
   2. William D. Gassaway --he was in the 1830 Census--Pickens S.C.
   3. Matilda A. Gassaway- I do not have a birth date for her.

The Gassaway family that I have met here, have moved so it may take me a while to fine them.

I hope this helps Peggie Holden Walker

Hello Dalton!

I saw your information on Jennings Nix on Ancestry.Com.

Which of the Nix families are you decended from? My grandfather was William Jennings Nix (of Alabama) who moved to Arkansas andwas married to Martha Elizabeth Moore. They resided in Conway County inArkansas and are both buried there. My mother, Grace Nix (married Marion B. Francis) was the youngest child of William Jennings Nix and Martha Elizabeth Moore.

It would enjoy hearing from you if you have the time.

As you remember the 1870 census and forward has had us stumped . . . well now I think we have our answer. Wanda has the following and I agree that it is what we have been looking for.

1870 Mississippi Co., AR Pg 561 #26/ Scott Twp, Pecan Point - Elizabeth NICKS age 36 (should be 41), b SC; William age 14, farmer, b AL (we finally found him); John age 13, farm laborer, b AL; James age 10?, farm laborer, b AL; Sarah age 12, b AL; Rebecca age 7, b AL

Now I think you had seen this but could not figure out the 2 girls, but I am sure this is Elizabeth and William is with her.

1880 Johnson Co., AR Pg 335 #7 Grant - Wood STOVALL age 34, b AL; Sallie (same as Sarah) age 22, b AR; Mallie age 12, b TX; Tilman age 3, b AR; Ora age 9/12, b AR; Eliza NICKS age 53 (should be 51), mother-in-law, b AL

1900 Johnson Co., AR Pg 19 #355/375 Grant Twp - Tillman STOVALL age 20, b AR Oct 1879, Parents b MS/AR; Ora age 18, sister, b AR Dec 1881, Parents b MS/AR; Elizabeth NIX age 76 (should be 71), b May 1824, grandmother, b MO (wrong), Parents b MS/AL (wrong) has had 4 children, 3 living (can't explain this)

I have gone on the Johnson Co., AR website and have ask for someone to look up the marriage of Sarah/Sallie to Wood STOVALL and hope it will tell her maiden name and parent/parents.

So, now we have something to go to work on. Sure hope it leads to some real proof. Have also asked someone to look for death of Elizabeth Nix and possibly an obituary.

Gotta run for now, more when I learn anything new.

NIX, Elizabeth, Gr. Mother, W, F, May 1824, 76, Wd, years married 58, children born 3, living 6. These last numbers do not match, I belive the enumerator turned them around, should be number born, six and number living, three. But that would still leave a question? Who was the sixth born.

Notes for FRANK HOLDEN: One researtcher, a GGreatgrandaughter, says his name may be Francis, since he named his son Francis and called him Frank. There was a Francis in Gordon Co., GA. in 1849 who was in trouble with the law and could have been the son of Francis Holden who live in Cass Co (no longer exist), in 1840, who was 70-80 yrs old. A Francis Holden was wanted in Pickens Co., SC, in 1836, for fathering a child with Mary Nix. This is just a thought, but no proof of being the same person.

It is interesting to note that he named four of their sons after famous Southern Civil War Generals; Robert E Lee, Wheeler, Forrest and Hardee.

Two of his youngest sons formed Curtis Bros., which was a Thrasher Machine Co, in the 1910-1920's which traveled north Georgia, Sand Mountain and Alabama to harvest wheat. This Company was very successful. These brothers along with the other family members found time to play musical instruments in the old Belmont Band. When the band was disbanded they donated the many instruments to help with the first Calhoun High School Band. Some of these instruments were destroyed by fire sometime in the early 40's. In 1936 they formed the Curtis Bro's Corn Milling and Mattress Shop, on Railroad St, Calhoun, GA, now Park Ave. They closed this business in 1958 because of bad health.

Hello Dalton!

First of all, I finally found some notes I had made of a conversation between my mother, Grace Nix and her sister, Cecil Mattie Nix (children of William Jennings). Grandpa William Jennings spoke often of his sister Rebecca - - no mention was made of Sarah. Doesn't mean she didn't exist - just that I don't recall or have any notes on her. So unless Mother and Aunt Cecil had it all wrong, Grandpa William Jennings DID have a sister named Rebecca.

Regarding William W. Gassaway (Gasaway) b. abt. 1802. Do you have any info on his parents? I have received info (if in fact it isour William W. Gassaway (Gasaway) that he was born in Pickens Co., SC. His father was Henry and his mother Rachel. His father Henry was in Polk Co., TN in 1840 and was 60 - 70 years old in that census. Rachel was in Pickens Co. in 1850 census. He seems to have died in 1857 in Pickens Co. and his heirs are named in court there. There were 15 children named in the Gassaway (Gasaway) Family Book. It also appears that Henry was the son of James Gasaway SR and his wife Rachel. James' second wife was Elizabeth Scruggs and she is the mother of Thomas Gasaway. Therefore Thomas is a half brother of William W. and Thomas was father of Samuel F. Gasaway who died in the Civil War. Samuel F. Gasaway was the father of Thomas Marion Gasaway who was the father of Mattie Cumi Gasaway Huggins born in Dardenelle, AR abt. 1872.Abt. 1880 they went to McAlister, OK and Thomas Marion died there. Mattie's mother was Mary Bird Gasaway and had family on Petit Jean Mountain, Conway Co., AR and she went back there to raise her children. Dardenelle is in Yell Co., AR, almost next door to Johnson County, AR. The book I mentioned gives very little info on William W. but does say he was b. 1802 in SC. It lists no wife but says he is in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census of Pickens Co., SC. Two children are also named: Jamima, age 20 in 1850 and Andrew C. age 6 in 1850.

Thomas Marion Gasaway was b. 1840 in Catoosa Co., GA and also lived in Walker Co, GA. This is supposedly very near where the Henry Gasaway was in Polk Co., TN. That corner of GA and AL (I was told) is full of Gasaways and all seem to descend from a James Gasaway who was in the Revolutionary War and got land in AL for his service.

Does any of this match with what you have in your notes? If it does,Jean will send me copies of applicable pages from the book and I can send them to you. The material is not on her computer so must be snail mail. No need, of course, if it is not our William W.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
