Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 6th October 1793 at Glapthorn in Northamptonshire, daughter of Elizabeth Brown, formerly Constable, and her husband William Brown.

In 1817, aged 24, Elizabeth had a daughter called Susannah baptised at Glapthorn.

On 13th October 1819, aged 26, Elizabeth married a farmer, pig dealer and beer seller named Thomas Palmer, who was about three years younger than her and also from Glapthorn. They stayed in Glapthorn, having another six children there between 1823 and 1835. Elizabeth’s father died in 1827.

The 1841 census finds Elizabeth, Thomas and some of their children living in Glapthorn, along with a fourteen year old boy who was working as a servant.

Elizabeth’s mother died in 1850.

The 1851 census gives a slightly more specific address for the family, recording them as living at the Dun Cow beer house. Elizabeth and Thomas by this time were also raising their granddaughter Elizabeth Warren, daughter of their daughter Charlotte. As in 1841, the family had a young man as a servant living with them.

A similar situation is recorded in the 1861 census; the family was still at the Dun Cow and Thomas was described as a farmer of 15 acres, pig dealer and beer seller. They still had a young man described as a servant living with them, although this time the man is described as an ‘agricultural servant’, which may also have been the type of servant they had previously had, working for Thomas on the farm rather than being domestic servants. Elizabeth and Thomas no longer had any of their children living with them by 1861, but did have two granddaughters living with them.

Thomas died in 1867, aged 71. He and Elizabeth had been married for 48 years. After Thomas’s death Elizabeth lived with her son Joseph and his family in Glapthorn, appearing with them in the 1871 census. Elizabeth outlived Thomas by just over four years. She died in 1872, aged 78, and was buried at Glapthorn, where she had lived her whole life, on 24th January 1872.

    Baptisms 1793 / Oct[obe]r 6 Eliz[abet]h Daug[h]t[e]r of W[illia]m & Eliz[abet]h Brown

This baptism can be linked to the Elizabeth Brown who married Thomas Palmer on the basis that it is in the parish she gave as her birthplace, at around the time the ages quoted for her suggest she was born, and the Elizabeth baptised in 1793 had a younger sister called Mary Brown, which was the name of one of the witnesses to Elizabeth’s marriage to Thomas Palmer.
