Joseph Palmer was born on 8th August 1826 at Glapthorn in Northamptonshire, son of Elizabeth Palmer, formerly Brown, and her husband Thomas Palmer, a publican, pig dealer and small-scale farmer. No birth or baptism record for Joseph has been found, and his date of birth instead comes from a family bible kept by Joseph’s wife, and was therefore not recorded until several years after the event. There is a gap in the children baptised to Thomas and Elizabeth Palmer at Glapthorn between 1823 and 1828, covering the period in which Joseph was said to be born.

By the time of the 1841 census, Joseph had left Glapthorn and was working as an apprentice to a wheelwright in the village of Aldwincle, about seven miles south of Glapthorn. The 1851 census also finds Joseph away from Glapthorn: he was spending the night at an inn in Northampton.

On 13th June 1856, aged 29, Joseph married Elizabeth Marriott at Glapthorn. They went on to have seven children together between 1857 and 1867, all born at Glapthorn.

Joseph’s father died in 1867. Joseph and Elizabeth and their children then appear to have lived with his mother, appearing with her in the 1871 census. Joseph’s mother died in 1872.

Each census from 1881 to 1901 finds Joseph and Elizabeth living together in Glapthorn with some of their children. They lived in the area of Glapthorn known as Lower Glapthorn along the road now called Main Street.

Joseph’s first known grandchild was born in 1883, being his son Thomas’s eldest son.

Joseph’s daughter Annie died in 1884, aged sixteen.

Four of Joseph’s six children who survived to adulthood moved to Lancashire, with most of them settling around Radcliffe or nearby Bury, sometimes staying with their aunt, Elizabeth’s sister Mary, when they first moved up there. Joseph’s son Philip left Glapthorn and moved to Lincolnshire.

Joseph’s son Thomas seems to have been the only one of her children who married and settled in Glapthorn. In the 1901 census Joseph and Elizabeth had two of Thomas’s sons staying with them.

Joseph died in 1904, aged 77. He was buried at Glapthorn on 28th March 1904. Elizabeth survived him by nearly fifteen years.

  11. Although no baptism record has yet been found for Joseph, the adult Joseph who married Elizabeth Marriott can be linked to his parents Thomas and Elizabeth Palmer on the basis that:
    a. Joseph's marriage certificate gives his father's name as Thomas Palmer, publican; and
    b. In the 1871 census the adult Joseph was living with his widowed mother Elizabeth.
