Place of Birth

  • Per 1850 census: New York
  • Per 1860 Census: New York
  • Per 1870 census: New York (IF that's him in Cincinnati, OH)
  • Per 1880 census: New York of Mass-born parents
  • Per 1900 census of daughter: Massachusetts (which makes sense based on how little she likely knew of him)

Suggested Timeline

  • 1844/5 born in New York of Massachusetts-born parents, most likely Henry W. Lowrie, musician/music teacher/publisher, and Selina van Deusen.
  • 1850: Easton, Northampton, PA in 1850:
    • H.W. Lowery, 29, music teacher, b. MA
    • Sebina, 25, b MA
    • Edwin E., 5, b NY
    • Arthur, 1, b MA
  • 1860: The Ancestry.com index does not find an Edwin Lowrie the right age in Massachusetts in 1860. However, a page by page review of West Stockbridge, MA finds on page 5, living in a multi-family structure the following “family” unit: #33
    • Ethan Van Deusen, 65, farmer, born MA [died 1862 of typhoid fever per MA VR 1841-1910; parents listed as Isaac? and Eve of Schodusk? NY and Lee?]
    • Climena “, 67, housekeeper, b CT
    • Silvia Loury (?), 35, housekeeper, b MA [on other records: Salina, Sebina]
    • Edwin E. “, 14, b NY <-- this would indicate that he lied about his age when he enlisted; at most he was 17.
    • Arthur H?, 11, b. MA [Arthur H. Lowery, son of Henry W., carpenter, and Salina A. [born] Dec. 10, 1848, West Stockbridge (Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850 (Online Database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2010).)]
    • Herbert K., 9, b PA
    • Mary C., 5, b PA
    • Edwin Shepherdson, 33 or 38 or 35, laborer, b MA
  • Edwin is also enumerated elsewhere in the 1860 census: 1860: In Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, there is a 14-year-old Edwin Lowry, factory operative, single, b. Massachusetts; living in the home of Robert L. & Eliza Fuller. Fuller was a carpenter. There are other possibly unrelated people in this household (i.e., a number of different surnames). This is likely a second enumeration of the Edwin Lowry of West Stockbridge, which is just 11 miles up the road.
  • Jan 1862: Edwin Lowrie of West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, farmer, 18 enlisting as Private into Company I, Massachusetts 31st Infantry Regiment on 20 or 28 Jan 1862. He mustered out on 18 Feb 1865. Research into this regiment indicates that it went to New Orleans (!) April 29-30 1862 and occupied New Orleans 1 May 1862-- the first Union regiment to enter the city. The regiment travelled throughout the south and was back in New Orleans by 3 July 1864 remaining there through March 1865 by which time Edwin Lowrie mustered out. I.e., he left the military while it was New Orleans! Henrietta, daughter of Edwin Lowrie and Laura Grosch was born there 11 months after he mustered out.
  • 29/30 April 1862: 31st Mass Infantry regiment deployed to New Orleans; occupied New Orleans on 1 May—the first Union regiment to enter the city. See History of the Fiftieth Regiment of Infantry, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, in the late war of the rebellion for narrative about a number of Civil War regiments -- including that of Edwin Lowrie’s.
  • 3 July 1864 through March 1865 – After traveling throughout the South, the 31st returns to and remains in New Orleans.
  • 18 Feb 1865: Edwin Lowrie musters out in New Orleans, LA.
  • Shortly thereafter he married Henrietta or Hortense Grosch. No marriage record yet found for Edwin Lowrie and Laura Grosch under various spellings in the Louisiana nor New Orleans marriage indices. Next step: Catholic church records.
  • January 1866: Henrietta Lowrie, legal issue of Edwin Lowrie and Henrietta Grosch is born in New Orleans.
  • 1870: Edwin and Hattie Lowrie are boarding at 95 E. 4th, Ward 1, Cincinnati, OH; he’s a bookkeeper. I find none of the West Stockbridge Lowries in 1870.1870: There's an Edwin Lowrie, 30, bookkeeper and wife Hattie, 24, living in 1st ward Cincinnati, OH, page 169. (stamped: 86). Both born NY. They're living in a boarding house. No children. Names and ages right, but nothing else; they should have Henrietta (age 4) by now.
  • 1875: mistakenly listed as Edward at 91 East 4th in Cincinnati, clerk.
  • 1876: Hattie Lourey, shoe paster, works at 90 Main, Cincinnati, OH
  • 1876: Edwin E. Lowrie marries Matilda ____. Marriage Registers, Extracts from Manhattan (1869-1880) and Brooklyn (1895-1897) Publisher: Dept. of Health, Division of Vital Statistics, New York. Publication Place: New York, NY -- See 1544128  for his marriage certificate (#6040)
  • 1875-1895: Cannot find the Edwin-Matilda Lowrey couple in NYC city directories between 1875-1895 (under various spellings).
  • 1880: The Edwin from West Stockbridge is definitely this one found in Manhattan (505, p 17): 44 West 55th Street (apartment building with several families), family #143:
    • Lowrey, Edwin E., 35, married, cashier? in N[?].Y. Henda?, b NY; pb MA
    • -, Tillie [short for Matilda], 32, wife, keeping house, b NY of US-born parents
    • -, Selina, 55, mother, D[ivorced!], at home, b MA, fb NY, mb Conn.
  • NOTE: in the 1880 NYC directory, there is no Edwin, but there is a Matilda Lowery, grocer, on 278 Mott! (But in 1882, the Lowrey at this address is a Bernard.)
  • 11 August 1893, Edwin E. Lowrie d 11 August 1893 in NYC. New York Certificate Number: 29816 (S4)
  • 1894: Matilda Lowrie requests a pension
  • Shortly before 1 Feb 1894, Edwin’s ashes were moved from No. 265 West 129th Street (NYC) to the columbarium, in Fresh Pond, L.I.

Clues for further research

1850: Massachusetts census (1900 census indicates that he was born in Massachusetts). There are a pair of (supposedly) [Lowrie?] sisters living in Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., MA:

  • Helen, 17, b. NY
  • Henrietta, 15, b. NY

No occupation is listed; I'm struck by the "Henrietta" as this name is used later in the LOWRIE family. They are living in the "Young Ladies Institution" Is this an orphanage? A Catholic boarding school?

Also in the 1850 census, but in Lee, Berkshire Co., MA is the following family:

  • Frederick N. Lowrey, 49, farmer, b. Connecticut [this would be a match for the Edwin Lowrie found in 1880 census below-- his parents were born in CT; but where is Edwin? He'd be about 5.]
  • Charlotte A. Lowrey, 45, b. CT
  • Frederick C., 22, clerk, b. Mass
  • Melissa E., 17, b. Mass
  • Marcia K., 12, b. MA
  • Sarah A., 8, b. MA
  • Andrew Phelps, 50, b. CT [brother of Charlotte?]

There are 28 LOWRYs (that spelling) in Massachusetts in the 1850 census. No Edwin. There are also a few by the spelling of LOWRIE and LOWREY. They appear to be of either Irish or Scottish origin.

1880 possibilities: Glendale, Hamilton Co., OH, T9-1023, p. 441a

  • Edwin Lowree, 36, b. NY, RR clerk, pb CT
  • Harriet, 33, b NY, pb CT
  • S.M., son, 9, b. OH
  • C. Hidi, dau, 7, b. OH
  • Nellie, dau, 9 mos, b. OH
