Edward Walton was baptised on 20th August 1843 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Elizabeth Walton, formerly Ward, and her husband Robert Walton, an agricultural labourer and shepherd. Edward appears in the 1851 census living with his parents and siblings on Sharpe Row in Great Hale.

In 1861 Edward was working as a carter for a farmer in the neighbouring parish of Little Hale. By 1871 he had returned to live with his parents in Great Hale and was working as an agricultural labourer and shepherd.

On 21st November 1876 Edward married Betsy Sellars, a dairy maid from Chapel Hill, a few miles north-east of Great Hale. They married at Great Hale and settled there after their marriage, having eight children baptised there between 1877 and 1886, although three of their children died as babies. The 1881 census finds the family living on Fen Road in Great Hale.

Betsy died when she was only 37 years old, being buried at Great Hale on 8th December 1887. Just over a year later, both Edward's parents died in quick succession, both dying in February 1889.

The 1891 census finds Edward and four of his children living at Great Hale. He had taken on a housekeeper called Anna Hewitt, presumably to help him raise his family. She would later go on to marry Edward's brother Joseph.

In 1901 Edward was working as a farm labourer at Silk Willoughby, about seven miles west of Great Hale. He had returned to Great Hale by 1911, when he was living alone in a three-roomed home. Later in 1911 Edward was prosecuted for failing to pay his poor-rate of six shillings and eleven pence. He claimed that he was not in a position to pay. The authorities claimed that he had had money left to him but was spending it in public houses. He was given a month to find the money.

Edward died at Great Hale on 7th January 1917, aged 73.
