Betsy Sellars (or Sellers) was born in 1850 at Chapel Hill in the parish of Swineshead in Lincolnshire, daughter of Mary Sellars, formerly Towning, and her her husband William (also known as George) Sellars, a railway labourer. Betsy appears in the 1851 census living with her parents and siblings at Dogdyke in the parish of Billinghay, just north of Chapel Hill. By 1861 the family had returned to Chapel Hill.
In 1871 Betsy was working as a dairymaid for a farmer at Billinghay Field.
On 21st November 1876 Betsy married Edward Walton, an agricultural labourer from Great Hale, a few miles south-west of Chapel Hill. They married at Great Hale and settled there after their marriage, having eight children baptised there between 1877 and 1886, although three of their children died as babies. The 1881 census finds the family living on Fen Road in Great Hale.
Betsy died when she was only 37 years old, being buried at Great Hale on 8th December 1887. Edward survived her by over 29 years.
