The birth date of Edward Dorsey, eldest son of the immigrant, is unknown, but he was over
16 years of age, when having left the province, he was again transportAd into it by Robert
    Bullen on March 25, 1661. (Patents 4, f. 88)
Edward Dorsey first comes on the records as a planter in 1664, when he and his brothers
were living on one of their father's surveys, as seen in a land patent of that date. He next
appears as a boatwright, and so signs himself in 1667. After this he is found as a builder of
houses and other buildings in the port of Annapolis, and in 1675 is recognized as a successful
young lawyer. From then on he quickly rose to prominence in both state and military affairs.
    He was Justice of Anne Arundel County in 1679 and 1685; Captain of Militia in 1686;
Major, 1687; Field Officer of Calvert County, 1694; and Colonel in 1702. He was Judge of the
High Court of Chancery and Keeper of the Great Seal, 1695 and 1696; a member of the House of
Burgesses from Anne Arundel County, 1694 to 1697, and from Baltimore County, 1701 to 1705. He
also served upon many important committees. (Arch. of Md. XV,V,XIII,XXIV,XX,XIX,XXVI)
He acquired large tracts of land in both Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties, which he
divided among his ten sons and three daughters.
The first land known to have been owned by Edward Dorsey was one of his father's surveys,
which he and his two brothers took up and had patented on August 25, 1664, calling it Hockley
in the Hole. (Patents 7, f. 378) This land adjoined tracts which had been surveyed for
Cornelius and Samuel Howard at the head of Hockley Creek in 1662. A copy of the original
patent, which was in possession of the owners of Hockley in the Hole for many years, is repro-
    duced on the following page.
On May 11, 1667, Edward Dorsey received a warrant for 350 acres of land for transporting
seven persons into the province. As Edward Dorsey of Ann Arundell County, boatwright, he as-
signed the said warrant unto Cornelius Howard. (Patents 10, f. 498)
