"Colcord, Edward. Whether this man "first came over" in 1631, or whether he was here in 1629, depends very much on the authenticity of the famously disputed "Wheelwright Deed." He was born in 1614 or 1615, according to various depositions. Hubbard says he was governor of Dover, but for reasons satisfactory to ourselves, we do not believe it. He was in Dover in 1642; "was in Hampton as early as 1645, and lived near where the north school-house now stands;" was, perhaps, in Exeter once, and certainly was in law suits pretty much all the time. He was a very busy man indeed; was in bad odor with all parties by turns; was indicted for causing vexatious suits, &c., but was liked by some very respectable people. He died in Hampton, 10 Feb. 1681-2."
