Obituary for the Long Beach Press-Telegram:

THOMPSON, Edith. Born Feb.9, 1913 in Twin Falls, Idaho, passed June 18, 2006 in Long Beach. A longtime LB resident and graduate of Poly and USC, she was preceded in death by husband Earle Thompson in 1977. Survivors are daughter Patricia (Warren) Harkins of La Crescenta and son Richard Thompson of McLean, VA, grandsons Warren Harkins Jr. of North Hollywood and Eric Thompson of Hong Kong. Graveside service at Rose Hills Friday June 23 at 11:00.

From remarks of grandson Warren Harkins at Edith's funeral:

Edith was sometimes called Gaga by her grandchildren. He mentions many of her attributes including her humbleness and devotion to her husband and family. He says that she liked to travel, do crafts like latch-hook rugs, needlepoint, and stained glass. She liked books, pets, gardening and cooking. She belonged to a bridge club, her sorority alumni group (Phi Mu), PEO, and also volunteered at the well baby clinic at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. Her family helped found the California Heights Methodist Church. Warren says, "Though she would indeed never admit to it, she lived a huge life. A successful life. A life worthy of emulation and admiration." (copy of Warren's complete notes for the graveside service in the file).

Land: Edith's estate contained 36.76 acres of land in Haw Creek Twp, Knox Co., IL inherited from her mother, Winifred West Wick who inherited from her father Philemon S. West. It appraised in 2006 for $169,096. No doubt Phil West would have been pleased at the price.
