Facts and Events
Married first Norman Galt, a prosperous jeweler. They lost two children (she was unable to have more), and he died in 1908. In 1915, she was introduced to the newly widowed President Woodrow Wilson, 15 years her senior. They married after a brief courtship in December.
She is most famous for taking on a significant role after a stroke left President Wilson partly paralyzed in 1919. She selected matters that came to his attention, and let the rest be handled by department heads, or no one.
Edith outlived President Wilson by nearly 40 years, dying in 1961.
