In the 1860 and 1870 censuses, Edgar was listed living with John and Candance Brown. According to the Prairie Homestead brochure, Edgar was one of seven children [see family page].

The 1860 U.S. Census shows him living in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York. John Brown (head of household) was a ship carpenter and was born in New York. His wife, Candace, was born in Canada. Two siblings, Ethie (age 14 years) and John (age four) were also listed on the census record.

In 1870, the census shows that the family has moved to Liberty Township, Clinton County, Iowa. John Brown is listed as a physician. Besides John and Candace, three children are living with them. They are: Edgar (age 16 years), John S. (age 13 years), and George (age 6 years). Edgar and John are listed as farm laborers.
