Facts and Events
Note: ABBR 1850 Ross Co., OH Federal CensusTEXT Ebenezer "Finemore", age 48, Male, Farmer, Farm Value $5000.00, BirthOhio Ebenezer became the guardion for his brothers Aaron, James and Charles Wilson when their father died in 1854. Ebenezer was also in the military serving Ohio during the Civil War. He was in the 149th Regiment of the Ohio National Guard, Company "E" as a Private. He enlisted for duty at Camp Dennison, Ohio on the 8th of May in 1864 and remained in the service throughout the war mustering out on the 20 of August in 1864. In 1865 he moved to Savannah, Missouri. He then moved to Burrton, Harvey County, Kansas in 1873. Ebenezer most likely fits the IMAGE of Charles Dickens notorious character Ebenezer Scrooge more than anyone in the family relations yet. In the late 1860's the hoop skirts were fhe fashion style for women. His wife Lizzie wanted to purchase a hoop skirt since she also had a shapely figure at the time. Ebenezer thought the hoops were "giddy" and would not allow Lizzie to have one. On a particular occasion Lizzie went to do some grocery shopping as well as other errands. While picking up the groceries she also purchased some hoops but kept them hidden. When Ross saw the purchases at home he did a little arithmetic and said to Lizzie, "Where are the hoops?" and then confiscated them. This caused a "domestic spat" that Lizzie never quite got over. Years later when the hoop skirts were still being worn, Ross decided he wanted his wife to wear them. But due to the fact that Lizzie thought she was too "pudgy" she refused. Ebenezer left a notebook of his travels from Ohio out to Kansas listing things he purchased or enountered during the days events. Veva Mann who is his great great grand daughter has the notebook and listed down several of his passages in a handbook she made for her family on the Fenimores. Ebenezers Fenimore lineage ended with the passing of his daughter Nancy Fenimore in 1946. He had no sons to carry on the Fenimore name. Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Lizzie) signed over his share of his fathers estate to his sister Mary in1878. Ebenezer was a farmer in Rochester TWP.
