PAUL DAILY REPORTER April 19, 1926 BOYS FALL INTO POLICE HANDS IN PILFERING OIL _________________________ Youths Involved in a More Serious Matter---Had Car Not Their Own. ________________________ Co-operation on the part of a resident living near the Guarantee Block & Tile Company at Short street and North Concord street, South Park, Sunday night brought Police Officers Edgar McAlpine and John Yeaman to the scene in response to a telephone call and four young men were caught in the act of extracting gasoline from a pump on the cement block property. They were unarmed. It was discovered that the Paige car they were driving was a stolen machine taken from Twelfth and Wabasha street, St. Paul, about noon Saturday and St. Paul police were notified and came for the four youths. Tomorrow morning they will go to court to be arraigned on charges in connection with the possession of the car without the owner's consent. Douglas Derr, 16 years old, 951 Fifteenth avenue north, South Park; Gaylord Fleischauer, 18 years old, 433 Twelfth avenue north, South Park, driver of the car; Edwin Anderson, 19 years old, 36 East Wyoming street, St. Paul, and Thomas Rice, 16 years old, 533 Orleans street, were the youths involved. Many Thefts Reported. Police Chief Truman Alcorn believes the capture of the young men may clear up a number of car thefts here and in St. Paul. There are about 40 thefts in St. Paul which are not accounted for although many of the cars have been recovered abandoned after being used for joy rides until the oil and gas gave out. The Guarantee Block & Tile Company pump stands along the curb on the edge of Concord street. It was broken and some gasoline stolen a couple of weeks ago, Steve Skorich, member of the firm, said today. Last night the office, which is near the pump, was broken into and keys to the pump were believed to have been searched for. A part of the pump was pried off with a bar and gas was drawn to fill the tank of the car, but the youths were not finished with their task when the two police officers, McAlpine and Yeaman, arrived and put the lads under arrest. Fleischauer and Derr were well known to the police and the latter immediately gave up information that the car was not theirs and told where it had been taken from. After tabbing the boys for taking oil from the cement block company's pump, the local police turned the quartet over to the St. Paul detectives and they were taken to St. Paul for questioning. Recent thefts of cars in South St. Paul included that of Talbert Erickson, which was parked at Fifteenth and Thompson avenues, South Park, near the Congregational church, and that of a Ford truck stolen from Al Robinson. This was parked in front of the Hillcrest. Saturday night the tools were taken from C. Stadt's car standing within about 30 feet of the house and on investigation it was found that all but two of the bolts in the head of the engine had been removed. These thefts have not been explained but the boys taken Saturday night have not been connected with them by and evidence yet obtained. Local police acted promptly on the tip from South Park and the youths were caught before they could get away. Investigation will be made to see if they are connected in any way with other car thefts that have been reported from time to time over a period of several months. Recently Mike Lynch was arrested here on a speeding charge and it was found the car he wanted to leave for bail was a stolen machine. He was turned over to the St. Paul police. He had been given a suspended sentence previously and the stay was revoked and he was sent to the St. Cloud reformatory. Oct. 14, 1927 - So. St. Paul Reporter. D. Derr, 17 year old boy who gave his address as South St. Paul, was taken from Minneapolis to St. Paul Thursday for questioning regarding his alleded possession of an automobile belonging to H. J.
