Dorothea graduated from South Side High School in 1925. During the Depression, she worked at Welfare.

She took a cruise to Alaska before it was a state. She worked for Standard Oil when she came to Cleveland. She met Newman through Lucy, who had an apartment and was dating George Larsen. Dorothea and Newman dated for seven years and married in 1950. Love letters were left behind. She was a charter member of the Hiking Club of Lakewood, Ohio.
