Newman was a baker. He had five sisters.

He was a lakes ship captain on the Great Lakes from 1941-1966. He was a ship master with the Columbia Transportation Company. He was the captain of the Edmond Fitzgerald from 1959-1966. He handed the ship over to the captain who sank it. For a period of 12 years, Newman was the youngest Captain on the Great Lakes.
