Doris Winifred Horsler was born on 29th December 1907 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat machinist named Emily Eliza Horsler, formerly Marshall, and her husband Walter Harry Horsler, a straw hat blocker. Doris appears in the 1911 census living with her parents and siblings at 111 Albert Road in Luton.

Doris married William Edward Layman in 1933. They appear to have had one daughter.

William died in 1978. Doris outlived him by ten years and died in 1988, aged about 81.
