Facts and Events
DAVID S. NIX:A Short History David S. was the youngest born of Daniel (Granger) NIX and Elizabeth Ann HOLDEN. James H. Walker and Robert Curren in their book, "Those Gallant Men of the Twenty-Eighth Alabama Confederate Infanatry Regement" states that Daniel was "Discharged from Military Prison, Alton, Illinois May 24, 1865." His records goes on to say "Wishes transportation to Guntersville, Alabama on the Tennessee River." I suppose that he walked home from there. I am not sure when he got home, but their son David S. was born 16 June, 1866. David married Nancy J. McCLENDON on 9 Feb 1888, when he was 22 and she was 16. He died at the very young age of 32, which was unusual for males of the NIX family. During those ten years they had six children, all lived to produce families of their own. Nancy appears in the households of various children in the federal census until she died on 5 Januaary 1944 at the age of 71. They are both buried at Moody's. There is a lot about this family that I have not yer uncovered, including the cause for his early death. Listed in the 1910 United States Federal Census; Alabama Etowah County; District 73, Warrior; Page 10 family #4;;; Nix, Nannie, head of house, age 37, children 6/6, ; Jethro, son age 21, single; Fannie age 16; Rosa age 14: Mary, age 12. The census information confirms all that I have currently entered for the mother and these four children. Ages match DoD's that I currently have, and the fact that she is a widow confirms David S. Nix's DoD of 1888. Finding her living next to Daniel, who was the faher of her husband is also reasonable. But two children are missing and cause concern. Eula D. is missing from the home in 1990, I have her DoB as mar 1883, which is prior to the parents marriage date. I assume that I typed the date in error, ie 1883 when it should be 1893. That DoB would match all other facts and still make her 17 and possibly married and away from the home on 1910. The other problem is Joseph Edward (Joe) Nix, not at home. But if all my dates are correct hw would have been 20 and possible married. listed in 1900 census, Etowah Warrior Precinct #20, page 12 of 18 residence 97, family 97, Nix, NannieJ., Head, W, F, sept 1871, 28, Wd, 6,6, Al, Al, Al, , Preston J.
