Facts and Events
David arrived in Simsbury before August 20, 1834 when naturalization papers state he appeared in court to declare his intention to naturalize. Naturalization was effective Feb. 13, 1840. Adding Melinda to David's wives is purely assumption but seems logical given the ages of the two children living with him and Hester in 1850. The marriage record reads: "David 2nd marr. Melinda Phelps, both of Simsbury, 8 Feb 1835, at the house of David Holmes, by Rev. Harvey Ball of Suffield." This would seem to imply that David 2nd was the son of an elder David Holmes or called David 2nd to differentiate him in some way from another member of the family. But who? 1845 (DEED 38.237) Tariffville Mft. Co. makes a rental agreement with William and David, leasing the farm lot to erect a house, lower story to be a dry goods store, upper story to be a dwelling. Rent $20 yearly for first 20 years, etc. 1846 (36:327) David and William Holmes of Simsbury spoke of land and buildings in Tariffville next to the Tariffville Mfg. Co. (As of 20 Sep 2004 the shell of the old Tariffville Mft. Co. was still in existence on the back road to Granby, probably what they called the "Granby Turnpike" in those days. 1846 (37:221) David received money in a mortgage on the same land and buildings in Tariffville, half of which was held by William. 1846 (37:222) William received from David, settling a debit note using his half of the same Tariffville land as collateral. 1847 (36:374) David and William spoke of the same building in Tariffville. 1850 (37:498) David again received money for the Tariffville land, "it being the same premises on which I now live ..." This deed indicates he is living in a house in Tariffville. 1850 US Federal Census for Simsbury, Hartford, CT: David Holmes, 38, b. abt. 1812 Ireland. |
