Biography

The Daniel who died in Granville County, North Carolina, leaving the children listed below, first appears in Granville County about 1786/1787, as "Daniel Marrow of Mecklenburg, Virginia", purchasing land from John Terry, Samuel Smith, and Daniel Scot[1] He was "of Granville" by 1790. [2]

His son Daniel (Jr) died about 1809, and Daniel (Sr) became guardian of his children, William and Diana. An elder William Marrow served as administrator of Daniel Jr.'s estate.[3] Daniel Sr. appeared in Court in May 1816; by May 1817, his son Drury S. had taken over as guardian.[4]

Daniel himself served as administrator of this William's estate in 1816, with Drury also replacing him on 5 May 1817.[5]

In October 1817 (based on a court petition filed in August), Daniel Sr.'s sons Thomas, Alexander, and Drury met and partitioned his land among the three of them, per his wishes in his will. Each plot contained 246.75 acres.[6] Alexander and Thomas were minors at the time.

In 1833, Daniel's widow Elizabeth conveyed interest in a over a dozen enslaved men and women to her children collectively, as directed in Daniel's will.[7] From those records, the children of Daniel and Elizabeth are identified as follows:

  • Daniel Jr. (deceased, as are his children)
  • Nancy (wife of Joseph Lewis) (b. ~1781)
  • Drury Smith (b. 1787)
  • Esther (b. ~1790; wife of 1) Stovall in 1810; 2) Richard Limay; d. bef 1837)
  • Elizabeth D. (b. ~1794, unmarried)
  • Alexander F. (b. ~1798)
  • Thomas Field (b. ~1800)

Connection to Birth Family

Based on will records, it's relatively clear that Arabella (Smith) Wilkins was the mother of a Daniel Marrow (jr), as well as two daughters, from her short marriage to Daniel Marrow who died in 1749 in Lunenburg County, VA. Lunenburg is next door to Mecklenburg. Moreover, Daniel of Granville named two of his sons "Drury Smith" and "Thomas Field." Drury Smith was a brother of Arabella's. Thomas Field was a witness to the will of Arabella's second husband James Wilkins.

Other Connections

Notes on this profile for Benjamin Morrow suggest a connection between the Morrow family in Lancaster, SC, Col. John Morrow (1750-1820) of Jefferson Co, VA, and Daniel Morrow of Granville, "his uncle." Daniel does not fit easily into either family, but Benjamin's brother was named Drury--the only other appearance of that name among Morrow families. As the Lancaster family has descendants in the Morrow DNA project, that makes this line a good candidate for testing.
