Daniel Goodman was baptised on Christmas Day 1777 at Willen in Buckinghamshire, son of Susannah Goodman, formerly Holmes, and her husband Henry Goodman, a labourer. In 1783, when Daniel was five years old, his mother died. Her burial record describes her as a pauper.

Two years later Daniel's father married Elizabeth Binks, who thus became Daniel's stepmother. Daniel would have several half-siblings from his father's second marriage.

On 10th April 1814, aged 36, Daniel married Mary Martin at Lathbury, about three miles north of Willen. She was originally from Market Harborough in Leicestershire, some thirty miles to the north. On their marriage licence Daniel described himself as a yeoman, whereas on his marriage record he was described as a labourer. The difference probably says something about his standing relative to the person making each record; he was sufficiently comfortably off to be able to present himself as a yeoman to the official who wrote the marriage licence, yet in the eyes of the vicar or parish clerk who wrote out his marriage record, he was better described as a labourer. Daniel and Mary do not appear to have had any children.

Back in Willen, Daniel's father died in 1831.

By 1841 Daniel and Mary were living at Tickford End in the town of Newport Pagnell, in between Willen and Lathbury. Daniel was working as a corn factor, buying and selling grain. They had one servant living with them, as well as a young man called Thomas Martin, who was presumably a relative of Mary's. Daniel appears to have been reasonably comfortably off; as well as employing a servant, his will makes clear that he owned land, which was left to his sister Mary, and he also left specific legacies totalling £3,000 to his wife Mary's siblings.

In 1851 Daniel, Mary and a servant were living at Tickford Street in Newport Pagnell. By this time Daniel was described as a fund holder, suggesting that he was sufficiently well off to have bought an annuity to provide himself a pension.

Mary died on 10th March 1852, aged 63. Daniel wrote his will the very next day. He only survived Mary by four days; he died on 14th March 1852. He was 74 years old.
