According to his biography in 'History of State of California', he was the son of Belinda Haynes and John Bridgewater. The family moved from Cass Co., Illinois to Lynn Co., Kansas in 1857 (part of the property lay in Bates Co., Missouri). His father died in 1862 at age 50. Cyrus served in the Sixth Kansas Cavalry. After the war he farmed in Bates Co., then came out to California in 1875. He first married Elizabeth Perry of Brown Co., Illinois and had three children: William L., Ethel (deceased as of 1904) and James H. of Redwood City, California. He then married Emma, daughter of James Shankman [sic] and had children Edgar, a druggist, and Harry 'employed as a mail carrier'. They had children William Lafayette (1865-1935), James H. (1866- ) and Clara (Ethel?) abt 1868. In the Robinson Cemetery there are records of Clara Bridgewater 1868-1870, daughter of Cyrus and Elizabeth Perry; for Charles 1873-1874 and Myrtia J. 1871-1874, children of Cyrus Wright Bridgewater and Emily Shankland. In the 1870 census for Pleasant Gap Post, Osage township, Bates Co., Missouri, there is C. Bridgewater, farmer age 25 from Illinois. His [second] wife Emma is 24, born Kentucky. Shanklin also lived in Osage, next door to B [Belinda?] Bridgewater. In the 1880 census for Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., California, Cyrus W. Bridgwater is 36, Illinois (parents IL), a farmer. His wife is Emma, age 34, born Kentucky (KY, VA). Bridgewater is 66, born Illinois (father (W.S.?) mother US), married twice, this marriage 40 years, judge in police court. His wife Emily 'nee Shanklin' is 64, born Kentucky (parents same), married once, 2 of 4 children living.
