Person:Cyrus Bridgewater (1)

According to his biography in 'History of State of California', he was the son of Belinda Haynes and John Bridgewater. The family moved from Cass Co., Illinois to Lynn Co., Kansas in 1857 (part of the property lay in Bates Co., Missouri). His father died in 1862 at age 50. Cyrus served in the Sixth Kansas Cavalry. After the war he farmed in Bates Co., then came out to California in 1875. He first married Elizabeth Perry of Brown Co., Illinois and had three children: William L., Ethel (deceased as of 1904) and James H. of Redwood City, California. He then married Emma, daughter of James Shankman [sic] and had children Edgar, a druggist, and Harry 'employed as a mail carrier'. Cyrus first married Elizabeth Perry in 26 Feb 1861 in Bates Co., Missouri. They had children William Lafayette (1865-1935), James H. (1866- ) and Clara (Ethel?) abt 1868.
 In the Robinson Cemetery there are records of Clara Bridgewater 1868-1870, daughter of Cyrus and Elizabeth Perry; for Charles 1873-1874 and Myrtia J. 1871-1874, children of Cyrus Wright Bridgewater and Emily Shankland.
 In the 1870 census for Pleasant Gap Post, Osage township, Bates Co., Missouri, there is C. Bridgewater, farmer age 25 from Illinois.  His [second] wife Emma is 24, born Kentucky. Shanklin also lived in Osage, next door to B [Belinda?] Bridgewater.
 In the 1880 census for Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., California, Cyrus W. Bridgwater is 36, Illinois (parents IL), a farmer.  His wife is Emma, age 34, born Kentucky (KY, VA).  The children are William 16, born Kansas; James 14, born MO; Edgar 5, MO -- parents born Illinois; and (unnamed) Bridgwater, age 8 months, born California (IL, KY). {p. 510a}

 In the 1900 census for Pajaro, Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., California, Cyrus 'Brigdewater' is 57, born Feb 1843 in Illinois (parents same), married 30 years, (city?) marshal; with wife Emily 53, born Dec 1845 in Kentucky (father KY, mother Virginia), with 2 of 4 children living.  Their sons are Harry 20, b Oct 1878 in California; and William 36, born Nov 1863 in Kansas -- both single. {ed 85, sh 35b, p.123}
 In the 1910 census for Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., California, Cyrus W. Bridgewater is 66, born Illinois (father (W.S.?) mother US), married twice, this marriage 40 years, judge in police court.  His wife Emily 'nee Shanklin' is 64, born Kentucky (parents same), married once, 2 of 4 children living.  In the 1920 census for Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., California, Cyrus W. Bridgewater is 76, born Illinois (father Tennessee, mother Indiana).  His wife Emily is 74, born Kentucky; and sister-in-law Minerva Shankland is 86 -- both born Kentucky, father KY, mother VA. Next door are Harry Bridgewater, 40, born California (father Illinois, mother Kentucky), 'asst post (?) post office'; with wife Ada 39, born California, (parents Iowa); and son Ellwood (17?) janitor school building, born California (parents same). {ed 250, sh 12a, p. 257}

His wife is listed as a widow in 1930. His son James is living in South San Francisco 'butcher in packing plant'; and his son William was living in Camp Fremont in San Mateo Co., 'grounds & bldgs'.
