Census data all have her name spelled differently. Cancy Ann, Cinceana, Susana. death certificate for Phelan has Synsandis. Per Robert C Johnston, who has done extensive research on the Cornelius family:

As for the spelling of Cynthia Ann, the reason of use "Cynthia Ann", is two fold. The family of Beverly Cornelius, as the tradition has been handed down my direction, was known as the "Ann" family. Beverly's paternal grandmother was Ann Cornelius (nee Dodson), and most of his daughters had Ann in their name. Secondly, the estate of Beverly Cornelius, recorded in Blount County, which he died intestate, consisted of over 30 pages in recorded books and over 100 pages of loose records, including all the lawyer letters and documents, which I have copies of, but is packed up in storage. Most of the official court records during the time of appraisal, sale of, and distribution of his estate to his children and grandchildren, all referred to her as "Cynthia Ann", which I deed to be the official spelling. Records like death certificates and census records were solely based on the sounding of the name and not actual spelling based on what her parents wanted her name to be spelled. She also used Cynthia Ann on her Confederate Widows Pension application, and she called her deceased husband Rowan Tidwell as "Ryan Tidwell", which must have been his nickname. I also have this record, but again, is packed up. Hope this helps.
