Notes From Lief Noll February 2003:
Raised in Armstrong, Iowa. His family came from Upstate New York, near Lake Champlin, and were among the first settlers in what is now Armstrong. The town was named "Armstrong" rather than "Cannonville" by one vote. He went as far as he could in the Armstrong schools and then attended Grinnell Academy in Grinnell, Iowa. There he met his wife, the daughter of a furniture maker. They went on to Ohio Wesleyan, where he completed his seminary training. He was ordained a Methodist minister.
