Cordelia Irene Jet Timothy was born in 1875 at Hastings in Sussex, daughter of Elizabeth Timothy, formerly Hutchings, and her husband, Peter Vincent Timothy, a physician and surgeon. Cordelia was the youngest of their ten children. Cordelia's parents appear to have separated shortly after her birth, around the late 1870s or early 1880s. The 1881 census finds Cordelia living with her mother and siblings at Southport on the Lancashire coast, whilst her father was living with another woman (with whom he would have a son later that year) in Manchester.

The 1891 census finds Cordelia and her mother and a sister living in Stretford in Lancashire.

In 1894, aged about 19, Cordelia emigrated. She sailed from Liverpool on 18th October 1894, on the 'Vancouver', arriving in Montreal in Canada eight days later. On arrival she was described as a servant. She later moved south to the United States.

On 20th May 1898, aged 22, Cordelia married Marion Lee Appleby in the city of Baltimore. At the time of their marriage she was living on South Broadway in Baltimore, whilst Marion lived in Washington DC. Cordelia and Marion had seven children together between 1898 and 1910, although one died young. Some sources suggest that their eldest daughter was actually born the month before they married. The 1900 census finds Cordelia (listed under her middle name of Irene), Marion and their children living at Brookeville in Montomgery County, Maryland.

Back in England, Cordelia's mother died in 1904.

By 1910 Cordelia and Marion were living at Linden in the Wheaton electoral district of Montgomery County. Marion worked as an electrician in a naval yard.

Cordelia's father died in England in 1919.

The 1920 census finds the Cordelia and Marion living at Woodside in Montgomery County. Marion and Cordelia's second daughter, Elizabeth, married in the early 1920s, but died in 1928, aged 27, leaving a young daughter, who Marion and Cordelia brought up. Marion and Cordelia's eldest daughter, Constance, was both married and widowed in the 1920s. The 1930 census finds Marion and Cordelia living at 9411 2nd Avenue in Woodside, along with their late daughter Elizabeth's daughter, Constance and her two daughters, their two unmarried sons Franklin and Robert, and their son William and his wife. Whereas they had previously rented their homes, the 1930 census records that they owned 9411 2nd Avenue, and that it was worth an estimated $18,000.

The 1940 census finds Marion and Cordelia living at 9417 2nd Avenue, which seems quite likely to be the same house as 9411 2nd Avenue from ten years earlier but renumbered or misrecorded in one year. The census record in 1940 considered it to be part of the Silver Springs unincorporated place. Marion and Cordelia had the same three grandchildren living with them, as well as their daughter Constance and their son Franklin.

Cordelia died on 17th September 1943, aged 68. She died at her daughter Frances's home at 8817 1st Avenue, Silver Spring. She was buried at the Grace Episcopal Church in Silver Springs. Marion survived her by nearly twelve years.
