Beatrice Eveline Timothy was born on 17th December 1865 at Markyate in the parish of Caddington, Hertfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Timothy, formerly Hutchings, and her husband Peter Vincent Timothy, a surgeon and physician. The family did not stay long in Markyate after Beatrice's birth, and moved around several times through her childhood. In 1868 they left Markyate and moved to London, living for a time in the Shoreditch area (where they appear in the 1871 census) before moving out to Lewisham in the south-eastern suburbs in the early 1870s. By 1875 they were at Hastings in Sussex.
Beatrice's parents appear to have separated around the late 1870s or early 1880s. The 1881 census finds Beatrice living with her mother and siblings at Southport on the Lancashire coast, whilst her father was living with another woman (with whom he would have a son later that year) in Manchester.
By 1891 Beatrice was working as a hospital nurse at the Manchester Workhouse. Three years later she married one of the workhouse officials, Sidney Hall Colman. He was a widower, with four surviving children from his first marriage to whom Beatrice became stepmother. Beatrice and Sidney married on 4th July 1894 at St Stephen's Church in the Hulme area of Manchester.
Sidney and Beatrice went on to have another six children between 1895 and 1910. The 1901 census finds the family living at 16 Queen Street in Manchester. Sidney and Beatrice's eldest son died in 1903.
Beatrice's mother died in 1904 in the Bury area north of Manchester.
The 1911 census finds Beatrice, Sidney and their children living at Farm Lodge on the Manchester Workhouse site. Both Sidney and Beatrice were described as workhouse officers at this time.
Beatrice's father died in Great Yarmouth in 1919.
Sidney died in Manchester in 1928, aged 74.
After Sidney's death, Beatrice went to live with her daughter Mabel who had moved to Wilmslow in Cheshire. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Beatrice was living with Mabel and her family at 1 Broad Walk in Wilmslow.
Beatrice died in Cheshire in 1956, aged 90.
