Sidney Hall Colman was born in 1853 at Taunton in Somerset, son of Mary Colman, formerly Hall, and her husband John Colman, a master mariner. The family did not stay long in Taunton after Sidney's birth, and by 1855 had moved to the city of Bristol, where Sidney was baptised on 1st April 1855 along with his baby brother Walter. The 1861 census finds the family living at 30 Centre Crescent in the Bedminster area of Bristol. By 1871 the family had moved to Wales, living at 6 Trafalgar Terrace Lower in Swansea. Sidney was working as an accountant at this time.

By 1880, Sidney had moved to the Manchester area, where he was employed as a superintendent at the Manchester Workhouse (which was outside the city's boundaries in the parish of Crumpsall at the time, until 1890 when Crumpsall was absorbed into Manchester). On 2nd August 1880, aged about 27, he married Alice Perry at Stretford, to the south-west of Manchester. They went on to have six children in the Manchester are between 1882 and 1892, although the fourth child died as a baby.

The 1891 census finds Sidney, Alice and their children living at 146 Cheetham Hill Road in Manchester. The census form notes that they lived in the "Back part of" the house, suggesting it had been subdivided.

Alice died in 1893, aged 34. Early the following year their youngest child also died, aged two.

On 4th July 1894, Sidney married again. His second wife was Beatrice Eveline Timothy. She had been working as a hospital nurse at Manchester Workhouse at the time of the 1891 census, which is presumably how they met. They married at St Stephen's Church in the Hulme area of Manchester.

Sidney and Beatrice went on to have another six children between 1895 and 1910. The 1901 census finds the family living at 16 Queen Street in Manchester. Sidney and Beatrice's eldest son died in 1903.

The 1911 census finds the family living at Farm Lodge on the Manchester Workhouse site. Both Sidney and Beatrice were described as workhouse officers at this time.

Sidney died in Manchester in 1928, aged 74. Beatrice survived him by nearly 28 years.
