Marion Lee Appleby was born around 1868 at Dickerson in Montgomery County, Maryland. He was the son of Ann Appleby, formerly Hempstone, and her husband Walter Franklin Appleby, a farm labourer and carpenter. The 1870 census finds Marion living with his parents and maternal grandmother in the 3rd or Medley's electoral district of Montgomery County, which included Dickerson. Their home at that time came under the post office at nearby Barnesville. Ten years later the family was still in the Medley's district of Montgomery County, and Marion was living with his parents, three younger siblings, maternal grandmother and two uncles.

On 20th May 1898, aged about 30, Marion married Cordelia Irene Jet Timothy in the city of Baltimore. She was from England, and had emigrated in 1894. They had seven children together between 1898 and 1910, although one died young. Some sources suggest that their eldest daughter was actually born the month before they married.

The 1900 census finds Marion, Cordelia (listed under her middle name of Irene) and their children living at Brookeville in Montomgery County. By 1910 they were living at Linden in the Wheaton electoral district of Montgomery County. Marion worked as an electrician in a naval yard.

The 1920 census finds the family living at Woodside in Montgomery County. Marion and Cordelia's second daughter, Elizabeth, married in the early 1920s, but died in 1928, aged 27, leaving a young daughter, who Marion and Cordelia brought up. Marion and Cordelia's eldest daughter, Constance, was both married and widowed in the 1920s. The 1930 census finds Marion and Cordelia living at 9411 2nd Avenue in Woodside, along with their late daughter Elizabeth's daughter, Constance and her two daughters, their two unmarried sons Franklin and Robert, and their son William and his wife. Whereas they had previously rented their homes, the 1930 census records that they owned 9411 2nd Avenue, and that it was worth an estimated $18,000.

The 1940 census finds Marion and Cordelia living at 9417 2nd Avenue, which seems quite likely to be the same house as 9411 2nd Avenue from ten years earlier but renumbered or misrecorded in one year. The census record in 1940 considered it to be part of the Silver Springs unincorporated place. Marion and Cordelia had the same three grandchildren living with them, as well as their daughter Constance and their son Franklin.

Cordelia died in 1943, aged 68. Marion survived her by nearly twelve years. He died on 18th August 1955 at the Suburban Hospital in Bethesda in Montgomery County, aged about 87, and was buried at the Grace Episcopal Church in Silver Springs, alongside Cordelia.

  9. Marion's daughter Elizabeth's death certificate (from Detroit in 1928) gives her father's place of birth as "Dickinson, Maryland", which is presumed to mean "Dickerson", as that is in the area where Marion appears in the 1870 and 1880 censuses with his parents.
