Coleman Williams was the son of the Sarah Williams who married Stephen Hogg in Virginia. The father of Coleman is uncertain. Some researchers believe that his father's last name was Coleman. Long time Williams researcher, Shirley Williams believed that Sarah Williams was the daughter of John Williams who married Susanna Ellis. This Sarah was listed in John's will filed in Culpepper Co. Book B, page 225 on 2-27-1777.... JOHN WILLIAMS, deceased will Feb. 27, 1777. Wife SUSANNAH WILLIAMS all of estate. Daughter SARAH WILLIAMS. Witnesses AMBROSE COLEMAN ,THOMAS WRIGHT , JANE FLOYD.. In St. James Northam Paris christening records of Goochland Co., Virginia, there a listing for Sally Williams, born 6-11-1767 to John Williams and Susannah Ellis. Shirley believed that this John Williams was the son of James and Ann Williams and that James was the son of William Williams and Jael Harrison.

Coleman came with his mother, Sarah and stepfather, Stephen Hogg from Virginia/North Carolina in a wagon train around 1801 and settled where the city of Whitesburg is now located. Colby was first married to Cynthia Davis, daughter of John and Elizabeth Davis on 9-23-1811 in Letcher Co. then Floyd Co. Cynthia had one brother Evan Davis and one sister, Jenny who never married. Cynthia's sister, Nancy Davis married Thomas Calhoun.

Around 1835, the Back, Williams, Hogg and Davis families moved to Breathitt Co and settled in the Quicksand Creek area. In 1837 Coleman Williams Purchased 100 acres on Quicksand Creek. and another 80 acres for $200. He settled his family on this land about 10 miles from the mouth of Quicksand Creek.

Cynthia Davis Williams died between the 1840 and 1850 censuses. It is not certain if Cynthia ever lived in Breathitt Co. Cynthia and Coleman had 8 children who were all born in Letcher Co. then Floyd Co.

Colby had a second marriage to Sarah Fugate, widow of Benjamin Fugate on 4-4-1852 in Breathitt Co. Coleman was said to have been buried in the Henry C. Calhoun Cemetery near Highway 30 with his grave only marked by a sandstone rock.
