    16 Jun 1902 Mattoon Daily Journal pg. 1 Clyde Manuel, negro horse trader, assessed fine in Paris for caring dirk knife.
    21 Jun 1902 Mattoon Weekly Journal pg. 8 About above incident, describes Manuel as "well known in Mattoon. He is poundmaster and conducts a livery stable on Railroad St. He had been to Terre Haute selling some horses and was on his way home when arrested."
    21 Aug 1903 Mattoon Daily Journal pg. 4 R. J. Early of near Gays filed suit against Clyde Manuel for possession of horse owned by Early. One of Early's employees had improperly sold it. When police officer approached Manuel, the horse had already sold to an unknown buyer.
    20 Nov 1903 Mattoon Daily Journal pg. 1 E. T. Smoot, farmer west of town, says Clyde Manuel, colored horse trader, drew a gun on him and threatened to shoot him. Incident was over a horse that was a "bull heaver" and stops because it can't breath. Manuel sold it to Smoot for $10 and another horse in trade. Smoot wanted trade voided and wouldn't leave, so Manuel threatened him.
    12 Apr 1904 Mattoon Daily Journal pg. 6 Clyde Manuel and band of gypsies provided excitement on Western Ave. Gypsies bought the above mentioned "bull heaver" horse for $10 and another horse on trade. They complained strongly. When police officer showed up, Manuel took the horse back and returned the traded horse, but wanted to keep the $10.

    12 Aug 1907 Journal Gazette pg. 6 Cow Cause of Court. It all began when Clyde Manuel sold to M. E. Raffety, a Western Ave. harness dealer, the said cow in good faith. Then Raffety sold it. Homer Hoots of Shelby Co. got a debt against Manuel, and wanted to take the cow for payment which a constable did. However, the suit is between the other parties, though Manuel is said to be cause.
    24 Nov 1907 Mattoon Morning Star pg. 4 Clyde Manuel is accused of false pretenses in Shelby Co., IL.
    Journal Gazette 18 Dec 1907 Shelby Co. suit against Clyde Manuel for false pretenses over trade of horses. The horse he traded had string-halt. (That is a neuromuscular disorder that gives the horse a bad gait.)Judege said string-halt is so easy to see that there was no false pretense. Manuel lives in Mattoon and runs a livery stable.

    1 May 1913 Journal Gazette pg. 6 Ad: When you want rubbish or dead animals removed & buried call Clyde Manuel, Charleston and they will be promptly attended to. Prices reasonable. Clyde Manuel, rural route, Charleston. The ad ran throughout the month until 29 May 1913.
    02 Jul 1913 Journal Gazette pg. 4 Complaints about Clyde Manuel's "rendering" plant due to smells. Colored man, formerly of Mattoon. Residents in southern part of Charleston are complaining. Board of Health visited to check it out. Manuel takes animal carcasses and turns them into valuable oils and greases.
    28 May 1914 Journal Gazette pg. 6 Manuel charged with maintaining a nuisance- his rendering plant two miles southeast of Charleston. Farmers complain about odor.

    30 Dec 1914 Journal Gazette pg. 6 Claude Godden and Mose Roby (both white) of Mattoon are arrested for stealing two horse hides from Clyde Manuel of near Charleston. Manuel and his employees identified the hides found in Godden's home.
    Same issue on pg. 1 Reduction plant, R.R. 6 out of Charleston report of robbery of above hides. Men plead not guilty.
    31 Dec 1914 Journal Gazette pg. 6 Clyde Manuel lives 4.5 miles southeast of Charleston, complain his rendering plant is nuance by James Millage, a neighbor. Millage claims Manuel leaves carcasses exposed and rotting after he is done with them, that pollutes the water, and sends Millage fleeing from his house. Manuel is said to be insolvent and immune from payment of damages.
    14 Jan 1915 Journal Gazette pg. 1 Godden & Roby are released for lack of evidence; the two have done "dead horse" work for a number of years and said the carcasses were ones they cleaned.
    30 Jan 1915 Journal Gazette pg. 6 Jury found Manuel guilty of a nuisance, but judge said Millage had no evidence of harm. Suit may have been because Manuel's dog killed Millage's in a fight. Clyde Manuel's plant gets carcasses from 40-50 miles. He was defended by lawyers from Mattoon.

    02 Jun 1905 Journal Gazette pg. 1 Clyde Manuel, colored residing 1500 Piatt Ave, fire unknown cause. This article listed all the many unexplained fires in the city and reported the insurance rates were going up because of "supposed incendiaries" all over the city.

    5 Aug 1916 Journal Gazette pg. 4 House and barn burn with all contents of farm 3 miles SE of Charleston. Both buildings started at the same time. Family was attending the circus in Charleston. Lost estimated at $2,500-3,000. It was insured for half that. Family has gone to Mattoon to live with relatives for now.
    15 Jun 1922 Disastrous fire on Shaggy Row when livery stable owned by Clyde Manuel burned and also two houses (M/M Ed Taylor and M/M S. F. Holloway).

    16 Jun 1902 Mattoon Daily Journal pg. 1 Clyde Manuel, negro horse trader was assessed $27.10 fine for privelege of coming into Paris, IL with a dirk knife. Shortly after, he was passing through on a train eastward but officers were on the platform and and he emphatically told them he wasn't getting off the train there.
    21 June 1902 Mattoon Weekly Journal pg. 8 Clyde Manuel, colored, and S. F. Holloway were taken from westbound train by police in Paris. Both are from Mattoon. Manuel had an 8" dirk knife and $15 but his palefaced partner was broke. "Manuel is well known in Mattoon. He is poundmaster & conducts a livery stable on Railroad St. he had been to Terre Haute selling some horses, and was on his way home when arrested."
    22 Jul 1911 Journal Gazette pg. 6 Clyde Manuel arrested for theft/receiving stolen goods of buggy from David H. Paxton, Farmington. Manuel admitted buying the buggy from "some man."
    27 Jul 1911 Journal Gazette pg. 6 Manuel freed of charges. Judge said there was no evidence for him to know it was stolen.
    8 Apr 1913 Journal Gazette pg. 6 Mrs. Manuel loses suit. Fuller Bros. vs. Mrs. Lillian (should be Lettie) Manuel, colored of Mattoon. They were awarded $200 and the loan association $95.
    13 Jul 1914 Journal Gazette pg. 4 Clyde Manuel, the colored "fertilizing king" fined $5 and costs for intoxication. He drove his rig on the sidewalk at the NE corner of the square and ran over Frank Albright, a cripple, and demolished his crutches.
    17 Nov 1914 George A. Kizer judgement in Mattoon City Court against Lettie and Clyde Manuel for (missing from paper)which involved a confession. Clyde Manuel was to pay $173.37 alone.
    4 Dec 1914 Journal Gazette pg. 1 Fist fight over debt. Clyde Manuel arrested and fined $5 and costs. Manuel and George Strong live near Wrightsville (group of houses was on State Rd. 130 on big curve before you cross Embarass River). A year ago, Strong borrowed money from Manuel but the white man has failed to pay it back in full, owning $20. When Strong met Manuel recently and refused to pay, Manuel struck him.
    14 Feb 1917 Journal Gazette pg. 1 George White, Lucien Robey and Clyde Manuel, colored, "a tall man and two short men" were arrested. Miss Mabel Smith became frightened by three men who followed her home. Days later she identified these three. They were released when no collaborating evidence was found and after three men did the same to another woman while they were in custody.
    4 Apr 1917 Journal Gazette pg. 1 Replevin case of Clyde and Lettie Manuel vs. L. P. Patten and D. R. Patten both of Trilla. Manuels did not show to court. They were ordered to return the stallion and pay costs. Manuel sold a horse to Patten, though Manuel's ownership of the beast has been questioned. (Replevin means claim & delivery.)
