He was the 2nd son of john and Estella Barney Anderton. When he was 6 years old he and his brother John who was 13 months older than he, walked to school to Monroe all winter with no rubbers or gloves. Soon the Presbyterian Church started a school in Monroe and Cloyde with his brother was sent to the Presbyterian school. The school was small the one or two teachers taught all grades. Cloyde and John paid their tuition by chopping wood, etc. for the school. When Cloyde was old enough to drive a horse they rode in a buggy without a top when the weather was the coldest and walked the rest of the school year. By this time there were other children girls and boys. Cloyde and John would get up early, do their chores, milking etc. harness the horse, drive to school and care for the horse before school time, cut wood at recess and noon. Their lunch was mostly fried bread with side meal (?) As soon as Cloyde was old enough to drive a team he was kept out of school until the ground froze too hard to plow. Just as soon as the spring work started he had to stay out again to run the farm. The other boys stayed in school. As they grew older the other boys played in the Elsinore band while Cloyde did the farming.
