Lloyd graduated from Thayer Academy and Bowdoin College, which awarded him a doctorate in his later years; this was the culmination of his ambition. He was a self-made biologist and tinkerer with surgical equipment. His Mark Company developed one of the first heart-lung machines, with Dr. Gross of Boston's Children's Medical Center. Lloyd had contacts at Harvard and BU through whom he promoted his medical interests, and was the Clerk of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA, where he also had a home.
