Charles is identified as Gawen's brother based on a narrative that Charles' son William prepared about 1830, in which William states that he went to live with his uncle Gawen after his mother died about 1880.[1]

Charles first married Hannah Henod and had five children (John, William, George, Margaret, and Ann). After Hannah died, he married Mary Murphy (sister of his brother Gawen's wife Margaret). They had two daughters (Mary and Jean) before she died in 1801. Charles married third Rachel Orcutt.[2]

His will, dated 3 Aug 1813, probated 10 Aug, names his children: John (the eldest), William, George (youngest son of first wife), Nathan, (Alford) Afford, and Andrew; daughters Margaret Loosley, Ann Crouse, Jean Ferguson, and “youngest Sister Mary Burns, wife of James Burns”.

Charles is an accepted Revolutionary War Patriot by DAR (A081241) and SAR (P-252749) for his service in the Cumberland County, PA militia under Capt. James Miller and Col. James Dunlap.
