Notes found on the website of the Whitby Online Historic Photographs Collection (www.ourontario.ca/whitby) relate a fair illustrated history of this man. He was a successful farmer and breeder of horses. His horse, Jock Bell, won the Queen's Plate in the 1870s.

He was married to Catherine Kingston Hyde Holmes (1829-1889) in 1848 and they had twelve surviving children: Alfred Wallace, James Sylvester, Thomas O'Callaghan, Jabez Warren, Alana or Alma Frederica, John Munroe, Charles Albert, William Duncan, Isabella Christine May Rose, Warner Woodruff, Henry Warren, and Catherine Hyde Holmes.
