Charles Porter “Bootes” EMEIGH is the fourth child of Charles and Margaret “Jennie” McBride Emeigh. He was probably born April 17, 1876, in Minnesota, based on his father’s Civil War pension application file, although his DOB and place of birth differ from above in some census records. About 1896 at the age of 19 he married Matilda Victoria HUNTER (born July 1877), one of six known children of William and Mary Hunter. William and Mary were both born in New Jersey; in 1900 Charles and Matilda Emeigh lived with the Hunter family on Quincy Street, 23 Ward in Brooklyn. William worked as a gateman on a ferry. Also by 1900 Matilda, age 23, had been married to Charles for four years and had one daughter (“Thelma” Audrey V., age 2 in 1900). Matilda could read and write and was employed as a school teacher. Charles worked as a sign painter in 1900 and also could read and write. It is possible that, like his brother, he was lured to New Your by Harry Emeigh, a possible cousin. In 1898, at the time of his daughter’s birth, he worked in advertising. By 1910 Charles, Matilda, and Audrey moved away from the Hunter family; they lived then on Jefferson Ave. in Brooklyn. Esther Mayes, age 90, a boarder born in England, also lived with Charles and his family. Widow Mayes had 15 children, but only four were alive in 1910. Charles continued his work as a sign painter. I have not found Charles in the 1920 census. But by 1930 at age 53 he had remarried (Florence) and moved again, this time to Alden Twp., Erie Co., NY, where he still worked as a sign painter. His second wife was Florence Unknown, who was born about 1892 in NY. Her father was born in Sweden and her mother in CT. A daughter, Charlotte, was born to this couple about 1916. Florence could read and write and worked at home., , , , ,
